Biosketch Johan van Heerden (PhD) is a Human Movement / Sport Scientist and has been an academic for over 23 yrs. He has authored/co-authored 43 scientific publications and has presented at 16 International conferences.Before joining UKZN he spent 10 yrs at the University of Pretoria as a senior lecturer in the Dpt of Biokinetics, Sport and Leisure Sciences where he headed the Natural Sciences work group and was the research coordinator in the Institute for Sport Research.

Since joining UKZN he has served as the Head of the School for Physiotherapy, Sport Science and Optometry and is currently the Academic Leader for Research and Chair of the Research Ethics and in Higher Degrees Committee in the School of Health Science.

He is a member of the Education Committee for the Board for Physiotherapy, Biokinetics and Podiatry on the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and served on the Standards Generating Body of the same. As past president of the Biokinetics and Association of South Africa, he was a co-founder of the World Federation for Athletic Training and Therapy.

Being a Biokineticist registered with the HPCSA, his broad teaching and research focus is in the role of exercise as a therapeutic and health promotion modality. His own research interest is in the Musculoskeletal Epidemiology of Sport and Exercise Related Injury and more recently an Exploratory Analysis among Participants and Spectators involved in the Transplant Games.
