Dr Michael Marshall is a graduate of the Wits Medical School (MBBCh) and the UCT Dept of Sport Science (BScmed(hons)Sport Science). Having trained in various clinical departments in Durban, Dr Marshall has worked in sports medicine for the past 26 years. He started the McCord Hospital Sports Medicine Clinic in 1993 (Durban’s first sports medicine clinic) and ran it for 5 years. He was a co-founder of the Kings Park Sports Medicine Centre in 1998 and worked there until joining the multi-disciplinary team at the Prime Human Performance Institute in 2012. Dr Marshall has also held a part-time lecture post in the Dept of Sport Science, UKZN Westville since 1997. He is a past-president of the South African Sports Medicine Association and he is the honorary medical officer to South Africa Lifesaving. Dr Marshall has worked with various sports codes and teams over the years, including individual sports (eg. athletics, rugby and cycling) and multi-disciplinary sports events (eg. World Association Veteran Athletics 1997 and the All Africa Games 1999). He serves on the Sharks Medical Committee, providing medical cover to the local professional rugby franchise, but only when this doesn’t interfere with providing cover at Kearney College’s home rugby fixtures. His personal sports interest is in road running, although a personal best marathon time of (just) sub-three hours feels like a very distant memory!
